The ice is nice: Rink at the Brink is ready for skaters

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The unmistakable sound of winter in Canada -metal cutting into ice -will blend with the roar of Niagara Falls when the Rink at the Brink opens today.

After two weeks of getting it ready, the Winter Festival of Lights attraction will open on Niagara Parks Commission land, creating a new winter attraction festival officials say they hope catches on like skating in New York’s Central Park or in front of Rockefeller Center.

  1. quote from the Review: (creating a new winter attraction festival officials say they hope catches on like skating in New York’s Central Park or in front of Rockefeller Center).

I am going to sound completely jaded here, but this is so far from the truth. I think this ice rink is an absolute eyesore and skating inside of a tent with no view of the surrounding landscape other then a row of plastic windows, is “not” like skating outdoors in the most amazing city on earth. My second rant, is that this was put in a location that probably has the worst view of the falls from every vantage point. Why? Because this is where the mist floats heavily in the surroundings at least 90% of the time, and when you drive by this “tent” you can’t see through the windows because they are covered in moisture from the falls??? I don’t get why you would invest this much money in a location like this, when there are so many other areas so much more peaceful and serene. This was an investment long overdue in a city that hosts millions of people from around the world… not a city that no one has heard of! I apologize if I have offended anyone reading this, or those who have worked extremely hard on this project. I just personally think that it looks terrible, it is in the worst location, it will not have the natural outdoor feel of other high profile rinks without hockey boards, you have to pay to park near it, they plunked an ugly construction trailer beside it to rent skates and helmets, and I don’t even see where you can buy a hot chocolate. I “was” excited about this project when it was first announced, until I heard where it was going. Now that I have driven past a few times I just don’t get it?

  2. I was dissapointed to see where this is located. I guess I did not realize it wouldn’t be closer to the falls as the name would have you believe. Also, as Lonny said the tent with the “windows” is not really what I had envsioned. Ahh well. This feels like a swing and a miss to me. Hopefully, I’m in the minority on that view.

  3. just got back and saw the location of this as well. The weather was great – not too cold and the mist was actually drifting toward the American side for once. they opened one of the panels along the side for viewing purposes. I don’t know if more panels pull aside, but still not the feel of a rockefeller center – or even the one we have in Pittsburgh!

Maybe it should have been further down the way where the mist wouldn’t affect it so much and it could be open-air. Maybe closer to the other gift shop – or even in Oakes Garden! I dont know how destructive putting something like this up actually is… i mean.. there aren’t any traces of the Pittsburgh one when it’s taken down.
