Regular contributor Drafty had mentioned here, that he saw in the Review on Saturday a notice of application for zoning change for redevelopment of the Loretto Academy property on June 8, 2009. The Public Notice board reads: ( To Permit a future mixed use residential condominium/hotel development on the land, consisting of 3 buildings with heights between 32 to 57 stories).

WOW I am shocked!? When the Sheraton purchased Loretto they purchased it with a legal clause I believe and full intentions to keep the historic building intact obviously with a different use which was a spa, inn and meeting space but to preserve the building. So to hear this is quite a surprise!

I love the old building but it sits on some of the most prime piece of land in the city and is well suites for such a proposed development so I would support it and hope it comes to fruition!

Actually, they have no obligation to maintain the buildings. The Loretto sisters were adamant when they sold it that the city NOT designate it a historic building because that would make it worthless and they wanted to sell it for the money. Apparently, Mr. Zappatelli is planning to include the buildings in the redevelopment as a sort of trade-off for getting the rezoning.

    Ok thanks for the info!
