From Yahoo! News:
The Canadian tourism industry coalition expressed concern that new rules requiring Americans to obtain passports before traveling abroad will significantly reduce northbound travel out of the United States.
“The publicity surrounding the new passport requirements is already having a deterrent effect on cross-border travel,” Randy Williams, president of the Tourism Industry Association of Canada, said on behalf of 20 groups with a stake in cross-border travel.
“Travelers are confused and anxious — and more likely to stay home or choose another destination,” he said in a news release.

I have a serious question, I am a US citizen from eastern Pennsylvania and I have never been to Niagara Falls yet, but would like to go. My main interest is the Canadian side since the NY US side doesn’t seem to have much to offer other than a state park. This new passport law stinks, but I guess in a post-9-11 world it is necessary to protect the US. Does that mean in 2008 we will definitely need passports or else we will be unable to enter Canada, even if all we were doing was going two blocks to Clifton Hill to enjoy the haunted houses? This sucks because it will cost us nearly $400 for 4 passports for 4 adults to be able to go to freaking Canada. Unless we go within the next two years. What are the current border requirements? Will they let you in with just a driver’s license or state photo ID? Or do you need birth certificates, too? What happens if you don’t have anything other than license or ID? Do they turn you away and force you to turn around and go back across the Rainbow Bridge to the US and you are stuck in New York? What about walking over, same requirements as driving? Amtrak? I guess the train requires proof of US citizenship when making reservations if you go from New York to Niagara Falls, Ont. Woud it be better to stay at a hotel in NF NY and walk across the border every time you wnated to go to Clifton Hill or whatever, or to stay in Canada and only cross the border back to the US when going home?
Nothing has been finalized. The wording I’ve seen is that you would need a passport or other official document. I’m not sure what that official document would consist of. Would a birth certificate, or some other state ID work? I don’t know.
I would expect that whether you walk, drive, fly, or get into Canada any other way, the same requirements would apply.
Good-day,
I will be picking up a friend from the Buffalo Bus Station on Friday December 16th, 2005. I am coming from Niagara Falls Canada. What documents are required from me in order to pass over?
I’d appreciate a response as soon as you can.
Thank you,
Julie Ascroft
Assuming that you are a Canadian citizen, as of right now all you need is photo ID like a drivers license. If you are a citizen of another country, then you will need the appropriate documents that state you are allowed to be in Canada, and that you are also able to travel out of the country.
