Could there possibly be a more dramatic backdrop for golf than Niagara Falls?

I don’t know how common this is, but I’ve never seen this before. The National Post has a sponsored article that is supposed to be “Special to the National Post”. It is essentially an ad for golfing at Niagara Parks Commission courses.

Growing numbers of golfers come every year to gaze in awe at the world’s mightiest waterfalls and play the celebrated trio of courses that helped the Niagara Peninsula blossom into one of North America’s hottest and most unique golf destinations.

Operated by Niagara Parks Golf, the two championship courses at the $27-million Legends on the Niagara complex, together with the Stanley Thompson-designed Whirlpool Golf Course, have become as essential to life and tourism on the peninsula as the award-winning wineries, War of 1812 battlefields, and theatre offerings of the Shaw Festival.

Launched to rave reviews in 2002, Legends on the Niagara is one of the showpieces of the Canadian game. Niagara Parks Golf recruited two of the country’s top golf architects, Doug Carrick and Thomas McBroom, to design sister 18-hole courses.

It may not be getting the same hype as the new zipline, but WildPlay’s Whirlpool Adventure Course could end up being equally impressive for thrill seekers.

The course is still under construction and is expected to open in about a month along the Niagara Parkway across from the Whirlpool Golf Course at Thompson Point, said WildPlay Niagara Falls spokeswoman Lindsay DiCosimo.

“We’re a few weeks away from opening up,” she said.

It will complement WildPlay’s MistRider Zipline to the Falls, which opened earlier this month at the base of Clifton Hill.

Zip-line decision expected by year’s end

    From the Niagara Falls Review:

The public should know by the end of the year whether a zip-line attraction above Niagara Parks Commission property will be a go.

Staff is preparing a report on the idea, which commissioners will likely deal with at their December meeting, said NPC chairwoman Janice Thomson.

She said the report will include input from professionals and the public, staff comments on how to possibly mitigate concerns and any potential amendments to the concept. It will outline pros and cons between the parks commission potentially operating the attraction versus the private sector.

Thomson acknowledges any proposal dealing with nature areas can strike a nerve with people. That’s why she’s pleased with the “tremendous level of support” the possibility of two new zip-line attractions at Dufferin Islands and Thompson Point, which is directly across from Whirlpool Golf Course, has received.

    From the Niagara Falls Review:

Hikers and anglers should find it easier and safer to get to the Whirlpool area, thanks to a group of volunteers who installed new stairs on the steepest part of the trail.

More than two dozen volunteers lent their hands to put in place 70 new stairs, making a safer descent to the Niagara River Whirlpool, a popular spot for fishing and hiking.

The work was a partnership between the Niagara Parks Commission and several community groups, including the city’s trails and bikeways committee, some firefighters and high school students.

“In 2008, the trail was almost impassable up there,” said Lisa Wilson, chairwoman of the city’s trails and bikeways committee.

The top of the staircase is near a parking area, across from the Whirlpool golf course.
