Parks official resigns post in Canada

    From the Buffalo News:

Fay Booker, general manager of the Niagara Parks Commission, has resigned from the Canadian park agency.

The reasons for Booker’s resignation are unclear, though a source familiar with the situation said tensions between the agency and the Niagara Falls, Ont., city government likely played a role.

Before her hiring as general manager last summer, Booker served as chairwoman for the commission, which has garnered increased attention in recent months because of its decision to allow stuntman Nik Wallenda to walk on a tightrope above the falls and awarding a 30-year contract allowing Hornblower Cruises to run boat tours around the falls.

“We will build on the foundation Ms. Booker helped to establish and continue moving in a new strategic direction to ensure a strong, sustainable future for the Niagara Parks Commission,” interim Parks Commission Chairwoman Janice Thomson said in a statement.

HEADS ROLL AS ONTARIO PARKS ATTEMPTS CLEANUP OF MAID OF THE MIST MESS

    From the Niagara Falls Reporter:

Chalk up a victory for justice and the Niagara Falls Reporter — whose articles on Ontario’s Niagara Parks Commission (NPC) and their secret arrangements with James Glynn, longtime owner of the Maid of the Mist — led to more than the unraveling of his lease.

Last week, four NPC commissioners, including staunch Glynn ally Archie Katzman, were fired by the Ontario Ministry of Tourism. Katzman sat on the board for 40 years. The others were Fred Louws, Italia Gilberti and Ed Werner.

NPC General Manager John Kernahan announced he would retire effective immediately. He had been there 12 years. NPC Business Development Director Joel Noden, Kernahan’s righthand man, was unceremoniously fired from his $130,000 job after 13 years. Prior to that, there was the resignation of NPC Chairman Jim Williams, who was replaced by accountant Fay Booker.

In short, all the architects of the Maid of the Mist secret lease arrangements are gone at the NPC.

    From the Niagara Falls Review:

Eight months after taking the helm of Niagara Falls Tourism, Joe Fardell is leaving the tourism industry’s marketing agency to take his own career in a new direction.

Wayne Thomson, chairman of the organization that promotes the Niagara Falls hospitality industry, confirmed Fardell resigned Monday as managing director.

“Mr. Fardell has decided to take this time to evaluate his current goals and future,” Thomson said, reading from a letter sent to members of Niagara Falls Tourism.

Fardell submitted his resignation Monday, Thomson said, adding he didn’t know it was coming. Fardell was not available Tuesday to comment on his departure.
