    Niagara casinos PR chief resigns

    The director of communications for Niagara Casinos has resigned from his post to accept a position as vice president of external relations at Niagara College.

    “It’s not easy to leave a workplace you love…20 years of friendships and incredible work experiences,” Greg Medulun said Thursday.

    “But, I could not be more excited to join the Niagara College team under president Dr. Dan Patterson and help them build on the already phenomenal reputation they have.”

    Medulun joined Niagara Casinos in 1996 as a member of Casino Niagara’s opening team.

    In partnership with Niagara Falls Tourism, Niagara College’s Event Management program is excited to announce that Jet Black and Dave Schram, hilarious duo from Amazing Race Canada, will be hosting Solving Niagara April 5.

    The Amazing-Race-style event is a fundraiser for Niagara College’s Many Hands Project, supporting renovations to The Upper Deck Youth Centre in Vineland.

    A quarter century after serious cleanup efforts of the Niagara River got underway, much headway has been made in reducing pollution levels in the vital waterway.

    But the flip side is that serious threats to the river such as a massive toxic waste dump in Niagara Falls, N.Y. remain, those gathered at Brock University for the release of a new report on the pollution-reduction work heard Thursday.

    The policy brief by Brock’s Niagara Community Observatory, authored by Niagara College professor Annie Michaud, looked at the impact of 25 years of environmental restoration under what’s known as the Niagara River Remedial Action Plan.

    There were about 40 businesses to choose from, but Tulliana Duiker had her heart set on three of them.

    “I’m actually looking at the convention centre, Marriott and the jet boat tours,” said the 19-year-old Niagara College student.

    “They’re all different, so I just want to see what I can get into.”

    Duiker was one of hundreds of Niagara College students who attended the annual Careers in Hospitality job fair at the Niagara-on-the-Lake campus Thursday.

    More than 40 tourism-related employers from across Canada set up booths and invited the college’s 1,500 students from the hospitality program to apply for various jobs.

    Hundreds line up for Margaritaville job fair

    Prospective employees braved long lines and wait times for their chance to serve a cheeseburger in paradise.

    Margaritaville Canada Ltd. hosted a job fair at the Niagara College Maid of the Mist campus on Dunn Street from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on April 8-11. According to vice-president of operations Stephen Deere, the Jimmy Buffett-themed restaurant is looking to fill 280 positions ranging from servers and cooks to retail workers and stilt walkers.

    Four hundred people had been interviewed by 1:30 p.m. of the first day, according to Deere, who expects at least 2,000 applicants over the four-day period.
