    From the Niagara Falls Review:

Metrolinx is on track to hit around 25,000 passenger trips on this year’s seasonal GO train service between Niagara Falls and Toronto.

Spokesman Scott Money said due to a six-to-eight week delay in ridership reporting, Metrolinx is unable to provide 2017 numbers.

However, he said it’s expected the service will see 25,000 passenger trips when the season wraps up on Thanksgiving weekend, just as there were in 2015 and 2016.

“Our Niagara service continues to be very popular with customers,” said Money.

Niagara Region Chairman Alan Caslin is continuing to push for regular Toronto to Niagara Falls GO train service to be up and running in time for the 2021 Canada Summer Games.

However, Metrolinx — the arm’s-length provincial agency that operates GO Transit — isn’t committing to any changes to its originally proposed timetable.

“We are aware of the request to launch service by 2021 instead of 2023 as promised, but it’s too early to say at this point,” said GO spokeswoman Anne Marie Aikins, adding Metrolinx is going to provide a full update on GO expansion in the fall.

    From the Niagara Falls Review:

Metrolinx and Niagara Parks are teaming up to make it easier for people to experience one of the country’s top tourism destinations.

The provincial transit agency’s seasonal Go Train service from downtown Toronto to Niagara resumes June 23 and, with the new partnership with Niagara Parks, visitors will be able to purchase travel packages that combine a round-trip GO Train ticket with access to the Wego transportation system.

“We are truly excited to be working with Metrolinx on this project as we invite visitors to immerse themselves in the rich history, world-renowned gardens, trails and pathways and breathtaking natural beauty that characterize Niagara Parks and the entire Niagara region,” Janice Thomson, chairwoman of the Niagara Parks Commission, said Monday at Table Rock.

Bring GO to Niagara Falls, says Region

    From the Niagara Falls Review:

Regional council has asked GO Transit to find a way to extend daily train service to Niagara Falls.

Metrolinx, the provincial agency in charge of GO Transit, is studying a possible expansion of the popular commuter service into Niagara.

GO is looking at four different expansion routes, including one that follows the northern peninsula CN rail line all the way to Niagara Falls.

But GO officials have said that route may require a costly bridge over — or tunnel under — the Welland Canal to avoid ship traffic. GO is also considering an option that would see the train stop in St. Catharines, with travelers boarding buses to continue to the Honeymoon Capital.

But at Thursday’s meeting, regional council approved a staff recommendation to push for train service all the way to Niagara Falls — and beyond, possibly to Fort Erie.
