Niagara Falls project spurred by Chinese investment

    From WBFO:

The Chinese government is supposed to put up the first $100 million toward a billion-dollar development in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
That’s from Falls Mayor Jim Diodati who leaves for Beijing this morning for talks on the planned project.

It’s been publicly in the works for months, a mix of residential, tourist and wetlands near the John Daly Thundering Waters Golf Course.

“A good portion of the land is wetlands as well which obviously is going to be protected. But, there is a good portion of lands directly adjacent to the wetlands that are in a real neat area. But, it’s largely been completely undeveloped,” Diodati explained.

From the first tee to the falls

    From the Toronto Star:

For the residents of the new Thundering Waters community in Niagara Falls, it will always be a short walk to the falls or — in the other direction — to the first tee.

Located just over a kilometre west of the falls, this two-phase 171-lot community of single-family homes and townhomes is being built on the par Thundering Waters Golf Club. It’s the first “signature course” by professional golfer John Daly who was actively involved in the design.

Bringing the community on stream was a lengthy four- to five-year process which required overcoming several planning and design challenges, says Crystal D’Cuhna, sales manager with Mountainview Homes, the builder and developer. But the wait has been worth, she maintains.

Schumer Puts Shoulder Behind Wheel To Remove Robert Moses parkway

From WGRZ Channel 2 in Buffalo:

The Robert Moses Parkway has long been viewed by some as a “concrete moat” between the city and its riverfront, and thus an impediment to potential economic development.

But for just as long, its proposed removal has been mired in red tape according Falls Mayor Paul Dyster.

“Sometimes people call it the ‘Peace Bridge’ of Niagara Falls,” Dyster remarked, in reference to the now decade long debate over building a new international border crossing between Buffalo, NY and Fort Erie, Ont.

On Monday, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) came to Niagara Falls to announce his support for the effort to remove the Robert Moses Parkway between John Daly Boulevard and Main Street and replace it with a park road, improving pedestrian access between the city’s South End tourist district and the waterfront, in hopes of sparking economic growth.

A few Niagara-related items in the Summer 2010 CAA magazine

The other day I received the latest CAA magazine. I’m in the Niagara Region, so there are always local things highlighted in the magazine. I noticed these 3 things in particular. I’m not sure which (if any) of them might have been in other regional editions of the magazine:

    1. The small “Coaster Craving” article doesn’t mention Dragon Mountain at Marineland, but does mention Sky Screamer
    2. I thought the ad for the Fallsview Cascade was interesting, as it doesn’t show the hotel at all.
    3. Thundering Waters is mentioned in the Grip It and Rip It blurb
