    Connecting Fallsview, Victoria districts

    From the Niagara Falls Review:

The city is looking at how the Fallsview and Victoria Centre districts could be better connected in the future.

“We’re looking at traffic improvements and how we can make turning movements at the intersection of Ferry Street and Fallsview (Boulevard) safer for pedestrians to cross, and also to make the traffic movements easier for routing services like the Wego,” said Geoff Holman, the city’s director of municipal works.

Holman said at first, the city was just looking at replacing a watermain in the area. But after receiving comments from businesses, municipal staff began to look at the condition of the road, traffic safety, and it “kind of evolved into a larger project.

“We’ve examined a number of different alternatives to make improvements there, and one of the alternatives that we’re bringing forward will be to look at making it a three-legged intersection, so it’ll be like a T-intersection (involving Fallsview Boulevard, Ferry Street and Buchanan Avenue),” he said.

    From the Niagara Falls Review:

It has been a long-time coming.

Businesses along Victoria Avenue say they are looking forward to the streetscape improvements approved recently by Niagara Falls city council.

“It’s going to improve the look of the street and I’m all for it,” said Andrew Vergalito, owner of the Italian Ice Cream business on Victoria Avenue, near Highway 420.

Victoria Avenue, from that intersection to Clifton Hill/Centre Street, will undergo a $3.5-million facelift starting in the spring.

Council approved the project, at the request of the Victoria Centre business improvement association, during its Jan. 26 meeting.

Fire on Victoria Avenue this morning

This morning as I was heading into the Falls, I smelled a burning smell. I didn’t think much of it, but then when I got to the intersection of Centre St/Clifton Hill/Victoria Avenue, there was some kind of flood. Well, it turns out that the water was from putting out a fire a few stores up the street. The building between the Love Boat restaurant and Antica Pizzeria had been on fire, but it was out by the time I was there. If I recall correctly, that place had a fire a couple of years ago as well.
