    From the Niagara Falls Review:

Not even half way through what’s looking to be another successful season, officials with the Winter Festival of Lights are already looking forward to a bigger and brighter future.

With a 10 per cent increase in vehicle traffic and a 12 per cent spike in donations at Dufferin Islands through the first three weeks of the 2016 season, event organizers are planning to expand in 2017 — the festival’s 35th anniversary — and introduce augmented reality features in 2018.

“We want to have something bigger for our opening ceremony (in 2017),” said festival executive director Tina Myers…

Myers requested council approve $300,000 for each of the next two seasons to help the festival continue to grow.

    Cochrane Launches Skywalk 2012

    From WBEN AM:

He’s been walking tightropes for 50 years, and Jay Cochrane will be spending his summer walking over a part of Niagara Falls, Ontario. He’ll be walking each night for 12 weeks from Niagara Fallsview Hilton Hotel’s north tower to the top of the Skylon Tower, 600 feet in the air.

Cochrane says the goal is to help raise money for a pair of children’s charities, the Boys and Girls Club and Tender Wishes, which helps terminally ill children have their wishes granted. “I always have a goal, and I try to surpass it. Instead of setting a limit, I’d rather be able to say I raised more than I expected,” explains Cochrane in not mentioning how much he’d like to raise. The walks are free, as are posters, and spectators can give donations. They can also buy DVDs of his performances, the proceeds of which will go to charities.

Sleep Cheap now accepting applications from local charities

    From the Niagara Falls Review:

The Sleep Cheap Charities Reap committee is now taking applications from local charities interested in receiving donations from funds generated from the annual event.

Eligibility requirements and application forms are available on the city’s website at www.niagarafalls.ca. The application deadline is Nov. 6.

As in past years, 50 per cent of funds raised from the 2009 Sleep Cheap event will benefit the Niagara Community Foundation while the other half of the funds will be split amongst charities selected by the committee.

Last year, 25 hotels helped to raise $180,000 in four days. Some of last year’s recipients were the Alzheimer’s Society of Niagara Region, Goodwill Niagara and the Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre.

A list of this year’s participating hotels will be released in the near future.

Room rates for this year will be $35 per night for a standard room, $45 for a fallsview room and $85 for a room with access to a water park.
