    If you thought Monday’s partial eclipse was cool, just wait seven years.

    On April 8, 2024 — just 2,422 days from now — a total eclipse will cover the entire Western New York region, stretching south through Cleveland, Indianapolis, Dallas and even central Mexico.

    In Niagara Falls, Destination Niagara USA President and CEO John Percy said he’s already preparing for worldwide media coverage in April 2024.

    Destination Niagara USA, the renamed tourism bureau of Niagara County, has thrown financial support behind a local push to install wireless Internet equipment on Old Falls Street.

    The Wi-Fi pilot program, which would allow up to 4,000 simultaneous users to access the web on their telephones, laptops and tablets, is being driven by the Niagara Global Tourism Institute.

    Destination Niagara’s board of directors approved a $50,000 allocation for the initiative over the next two budget years last week, according to Andrea Czopp, the organization’s director of communications.

    It’s expected to be one of the biggest events happening at Niagara Falls this year – Erendira Wallenda will be flying, suspended from a helicopter by her teeth, over the falls.

    “For whatever reason, every time there’s this sense of wonder,” said Andrea Czopp, the Communications Director for Destination Niagara USA. “People do all kinds of crazy things for crazy reasons and I think there’s something about the power of this water that ignites an intrigue.”

    The stunt is taking place at 8:30am Thursday, June 15.

    Ever the optimist, the local hotelier has been one of the city’s biggest boosters for years, both as a private business owner and as a former chairman of the county tourism agency, formerly known as the Niagara Tourism and Convention Corp. and now known as Destination Niagara USA.

    It seems like whenever I run into Frank he’s working.

    Niagara Falls announced events and activities for this summer.

    Destination NiagaraUSA, Old Falls Street, USA, Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino and Niagara Falls State Park held a joint press conference Thursday to announce the plans.

    “I am so pleased that all of our downtown partners have come together to share all of the exciting events and activities that will be taking place this summer,” said John Percy, President & CEO of Destination Niagara USA in a statement. “As we look forward to another extremely successful tourist season, we are thrilled that our visitors and residents will have access to such a diverse and entertaining list of things to do.”
