Just how old is the Ontario Provincial Police?
When they started out, they didn’t take mug shots at a police station – they had to bring suspects to a professional photo studio.
They started in 1909 with a superintendent, five inspectors and 45 constables … covering an entire province.
It took a year just to get uniforms.
Today, the OPP is one of North America’s largest police forces with 5,900 uniformed officers (including part-time and cadets), 2,600 civilian employees and 850 auxiliary members.
A year-long celebration to mark the force’s 100th anniversary kicked off Saturday at Queen Victoria Park in Niagara Falls.
I was walking around Saturday (before seeing the article) and noticed all of the OPP around. Here are a couple of pictures I took with my (crummy) cell phone camera:
