My husband’s birthday is in December, and I try to do something memorable for him every year. This year, I had the bright idea of taking him to Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, for a birthday dinner. I figured that we never know what spring can bring, so let’s go to Canada now, while we still have the chance. If you don’t know what I mean by “still have the chance”, a brief explanation is in order:
Yes, this is a true experience….I can relate! As the saying goes, “Been there….Done that!!! In fact, Karen’s Dad and I used to take a 5 day vacation every year during January or February just to experience this. I highly recommend it, if just once…go to the Falls during the “extreme” Winter season. It is magnificent!!!
We even have a photo, when Karen was little, with an icicle having from Karen’s Dad’s hair!!! It brings smiles even today!!!
I have a feeling if my siblings ever got involved in this, they would be Karen’s brother 1 and Karen’s brother 2.
That’s right, people - it’s all about ME! : )
I’m kidding naturally - I just think it’s funny.
greatest experiences in niagara falls are in winter, perfect time to go.
unless of course you want to go to marineland or the butterfly place…
not too many things prettier than how the ice forms on the laterns along the falls walkway..or the way the ice and snow looks from journey behind the falls..a definate MUST see!

I’m not one for the cold, but we’ve been hoping to manage an “extreme” falls trip sometime. We ventured up there a few years ago around January 2nd thinking it would be snowy, icy etc. and we would get to do the festival of lights in a nice wintery setting. But, that was not to be. We got wet and chilly, but not so much as a snowflake. And they had the horse drawn carriage rides, it would have been sooooooo cooooool!! We were a bit disappointed. We’d really like to see it covered in snow and nice and iced up. My father-in-law has photos of a trip they took with the ice hanging from the lanterns, and we want the chance to take our own. It’s just beautiful.
On a sort of related note…. Being the 2nd of January, I was quite impressed with how clean the area was. It was a bit muddy, but knowing how many people would have been in the immediate area just the day or so before. Not sure if it was the considerate visitors, or the hard workers picking up, but either way - GOOD JOB!
i’m a summer type of guy… but niagara falls is an exception in my case!
