Driver’s licence called ‘important first step’

    From the Niagara Falls Review:

A new secure driver’s licence could be important in helping Canadians avoid passport hassles at the border, says the executive director of the Binational Tourism Alliance.

But it will require everyone getting onboard – not just Ontario.

“This is an important first step, but we’re only halfway there,” said Arlene White.

“Without the (federal government) stepping up to the plate now … we’re still going to be behind the eight- ball.”

The new Ontario driver’s licence, announced Friday by Transportation Minister Jim Bradley, will include security features such as laser-engraved personal information (photos, signature, etc.), a fine line background, 2D barcode, micro and rainbow printing, and a secondary photo.

There will also be a secure portion which can be used in the future to include citizenship information.

“The province is working towards enabling Ontarians to use their driver’s licence as a border-crossing document,” said Bradley.
