Ray Weaver
Ray Weaver was a "hometown" boy. He grew up in Niagara Falls, New York, undoubtedly inspired by the seventh Natural Wonder of the World so near by. In 1961, he challenged the Great Gorge Rapids and Whirlpool in an 800-pound boat made of 16-gauge steel plate. He added a three and a half-horsepower outboard motor in hopes of guiding his boat safely through the Whirlpool.
In the summer of 1961, he launched near the Maid of the Mist dock. The motor became waterlooged and quit working as Weaver entered the Whirlpool. The vortex sucked the boat in and buffeted it for four hours before changing currents allowed the boat to slip free. After seven long hours, Weaver finally docked at Queenston. |
