Annie Taylor biography
Description: Annie Taylor
In 1901, this Michigan school teacher was the first person to go over the Falls in a barrel. She was 63 years old, even though she claimed she was just 43. Annie Taylor burrowed into the padded barrel with a small mattress and, allegedly, a kitten. In the bottom of the barrel, for ballast, was an anvil weighing 100-200 pound. The lid was screwed on and a cork was used to plug the hole where air was pumped in with a tire pump.
A small boat towed the barrel out into the Niagara River and cut it loose. Forty minutes later, at the bottom of the Falls, Annie Taylor's barrel drifted close enough to shore to be hooked and dragged ashore. She emerged with only a few cuts and bruises, but claiming, "No one ought to ever do that again." (The kitten was okay, too.) Why would a woman in her sixties attempt such a dangerous undertaking? Mrs. Taylor had hoped to cash in on the fame of being the first to take the plunge over the might Falls. For a short while, she eked out a living posing for photographs. But 20 years after her daring feat, she died destitute in Niagara Falls, New York.
