Description: The Hill Family Legacy
Whatever ran in the veins of Red Hill, Sr., Red Hill, Jr. and Major Lloyd Hill had to be part blood and part ice water - the water of the Niagara River. All three felt compelled to seal themselves in barrels and careen through the Rapids and Whirlpool tim and again, a total of nine times altogether. Even after Red Hill, Jr. died going over the Falls in 1951, Major Hill still challenged the river's churning water two more times. During his last trip, his barrel filled with 79 gallons of water before he crawled out and swam to shore dragging the barrel with him.
While their daredevilry is most noted, perhaps the even more heroic deeds performed by Hill, Sr. and Hill, Jr. were their lifesaving rescues, despite the river's perilous undertows, tides, and eddies. Mr. Hill, Sr. received more lifesaving awards from the Canadian government than any man... before or since.
William "Red" Hill, Jr.
Red Hill, Jr. was born the son of a legend, destined to follow in his father's footsteps by twice barrelling through the Great Gorge Rapids and Whirlpool. His 1,000-pound Silve Streak barrel was built for his second foray. As testament to the power of those tumultuous river waters, the barrel was tossed approximately 40 feet in the air by a wave. Hill, Jr. sought a third great adventure, to memorialize his father. In 1951, he built ""The Thing"" for a trip over the Falls. The Thing was constructed of 13 large, heavy duty inner tubes lashed together - light enough, in theory, to be tossed free of the rocks at the bottom of the Falls. In reality, it was torn apart, with tragic consequences.
