Dave Munday biography
Description: Dave Munday
Of all the Niagara Falls daredevils, Dave Munday stands alone. He is the only one to go over the Falls twice, and the only one to go through the Whirlpool and then over the Falls - this despite the fact that he couldn't swim and was deathly afraid of suffocation. Munday made his first attempt on the Falls in July, 1985. His launch, however, was witnessed by a police office who alerted Ontario Hydro. The utility company reduced the water level five feet in three minutes, snaring Munday in the Hydro power pool. In Octber of 1985, Munday returned. His barrel was put into the water so close to the Falls that this time he couldn't be stopped.
In 1987, Dave Munday once again attempted to go over the Falls in a "no frills" barrel, and once again was spotted by the police and thwarted. A little over two weeks later, he was back with the same barrel, and successfully out maneuvered police patrols, the Great Gorge Rapids and Whirlpool.
Back again. 1990, this time with a 1,000-pound homemade, 1/4 inche steel barrel padded with foam. No oxygen tanks. His foam barrel became stranded in the rocks on the brink of the Falls due to low water, and was fished out by a cable attached to a crane.
Three years later, Munday made his second successful descent of the Falls in a 660-pound, converted diving bell, purchased from the Canadian Coast Guard. He was knocked unconscious because he had refused to wear a protective helment, but he sustained no major injuries. "I did not want to go ver the Falls twice," he stated. "It was said in 1985 that I had a 'high tech' barrel and that I did not have the courage of the old-time barrel riders. I was dealing with the conditions of today (low water, less cushioning from rocks) that the old-time barrel riders never faced.""
