Annie Taylor took a kitten. George Stathakis took Sonny Boy, his turtle, with him. Stathakis was born in Greece, where he became a religious mystic. Then he moved to Buffalo, New York where he became a chef. The thunder of the Falls proved an irresistible Siren's call. His 2,000-pound wood and steel barrel was a sturdy vehicle and withstood the plunge, but it was caught for 22 hours in an eddy behind the Falls. Unfortunately, Stathakis had only an eight-hour supply of air. Sonny Boy, however, did survive. |
