William Fitzgerald
William Fitzgerald, a.k.a. Nathan T. Boya
Intrigue surrounds the feat of William Fitgerald. he arrived at the Falls unannounced in 1961, emerged from his plunge with hardly a scratch, and disappeared without fanfare. Fitzgerald was an African-American who said he was from the Bronx, but no one ever really knew for sure.
His craft was nicknamed the "Plunge-O-Sphere" - essentially a big rubber ball with a steel frame inside. On the advice of Jean Lussier, who had made his own trip over the Falls in 1928, Fitzgerald added 13 cannisters of oxygen to his original 30-hour air supply. He was, however, picked up moments after his descent by a Maid of the Mist launch, and arrested for failing to receive permission from the Niagara Parks Commission |
