Things to do in Niagara Falls: Skylon Tower Fun Centre

fun_centre_pamphlet_cover.jpgThis is the last of my series on the arcades in Niagara Falls. I previously covered the Great Canadian Midway and Marvel Super Heroes Adventure City. Today I will be posting about the Skylon Tower Fun Centre.

Probably the biggest problem with the Skylon Tower Fun Centre is that it is so big. If the place isn’t full of games, it looks empty. I have been there a couple of times in the last week preparing for this postings, and I was actually surprised with how many games they do have. It’s just that the area is so large, the ceilings so high, and you enter it from an upper level, it appears that it is almost empty. It’s also probably unfair to be doing these sorts of postings when there aren’t so many people around, and the staffing levels are low.

The Skylon Tower Fun Centre has the same types of games that the other arcades have. There is a good selection of games for young children. There are also many sports games, including a few bowling lanes. There are also the common “pusher” games, air hockey, and some classic arcade games.

They have a large redemption centre where you can trade in your tickets for prizes. During the off season, the redemption area is closed, but one of the retail stores upstairs can help you.

There are several well-known fast-food chains (Mr. Sub, DQ Orange Julius, Pizza Pizza) that have a location in the food court. I have never seen them open, but admittedly have never been in there on a weekend in the summer.

Based on comments in previous post, people have fond memories of what the games area used to be like, and they long for those days. There have been no announced plans for any improvements.

Things to do in Niagara Falls: Marvel Super Heroes Adventure City

attres_marvel_pic3.jpg

Continuing my series on the arcades in the tourist area (last week I wrote about the Great Canadian Midway), today I will write a bit about Marvel Super Heroes Adventure City. This is owned by Canadian Niagara Hotels and is in the Falls Avenue complex.

Marvel Super Heroes Adventure City opened a couple of years ago, after the Great Canadian Midway opened.Although not as big, there are plenty of games and some attractions. I’ll write about the Spider-man ride, Incredible Hulk Mini-putt, X-Men Bumper cards, and the rest another time.

The arcade isn’t nearly as big as Great Canadian Midway, but the theming is fantastic, and the kids will love it. There is a huge sign outside the building with the incredible Hulk on it that I’m sure draws many people in. Once inside, the games are pretty standard, but the signs and rides are all based on Marvel comic characters. Many of the prizes at the redemption booth are also Marvel-themed prizes.

It is hard to make a comparison between Marvel Super Heroes Adventure City and Great Canadian Midway. They have a lot in common, but they are also entirely different. If you have children, then you’ll probably have to check out both :-)

Things to do in Niagara Falls: Great Canadian Midway

Over the next few entries in this weekly feature, I’m going to write about the 3 arcades that are in the main tourist area. Calling them arcades probably isn’t fair. When I think of an arcade I think of a small dark area crammed with video games and pinball machines. The arcades in the tourist area are giant, open spaces with classic video games, bowling, sports simulators, and more. The 3 operations are the Great Canadian Midway (HOCO Limited), Marvel Superheroes Adventure City (Canadian Niagara Hotels), and SkyQuest (Skylon) (also called Skylon Entertainment Centre or Skylon Fun Centre). To start of the series, I’ll write about the Great Canadian Midway.

Prior to 2002, HOCO Limited used to have their Dinosaur Park Miniature Golf and Dazzleland Arcade right at the street on Clifton Hill. When construction started, the miniature golf course was moved to a portion of the Comfort Inn Clifton Hill parking lot, and Dazzleland was taken out entirely. In its place a huge Boston Pizza (largest in Canada) and a 60,000 square foot entertainment complex was built.

Inside Boston Pizza (the upper level) is a bar and games area called Sports Zone which is essentially a continuaton of the games downstairs. Upstairs are several Bowlingo lanes, a sports simulator (soccer, hockey, pitching, etc) and many other sports-related games. Although there are a couple of things that younger children would enjoy, the games are mostly for the teenager or adult crowd.

Downstairs is where most of the games are, and this is really what is considered the Great Canadian Midway (GCM for short). It’s quite an impressive site as you walk in and you see such high ceilings lit up and games as far as you can see. There are 2 rides inside the GCM that cost more to go on. Cosmic Coaster (previously called Fun House Express and FX Thrill Ride) is a roller coaster motion simulator and Ghost Blasters is a black-lit ride where you shoot at targets that are ghosts. I’ll cover both of these in future postings.

There are games for people of all ages. There are games that are very easy that are aimed for the small children. They have miniature versions of some of the more popular games such as Skee-ball that is about 1/3 the size and little basketball hoops. There are the traditional carnival types games such as spraying water at a target to make a boat move along a track, a hammer drop game to see how “strong” you are, and more. There are also many of the “pusher” games that are almost like casino games. These games consist of a platform full of tokens with a small bar constantly pushing at the edge of it. As you drop tokens onto the platform, the pusher may push that token into another token, causing some tokens to fall off the platform. In this case, and in almost all of the other games, you get tickets for how well you do in the game.

As can be expected, the prizes you get when you redeem the tickets are pretty useless, but everyone still gets excited about it anyway. If you spend enough money and earn enough tickets, there are some big prizes such as DVD players and more.

Inside GCM is also a snack bar and public washrooms. There is also an entrance to the Wendy’s on Clifton Hill.

Overall I think that the Great Canadian Midway is a fantastic place to visit. The games are fun and my 2 kids love it. I’d highly recommend it to anyone.

Things to do in Niagara Falls: Niagara SkyWheel

Starting today, every Thursday I hope to highlight an attraction, hotel, or other operation in Niagara Falls. As I have with the other new features, I’m starting with something easy.

skywheel_logo.gif

A year and a half ago the Golden Griddle on Clifton Hill, along with the lobby of the Quality Inn Clifton Hill was torn down to make room for a giant Ferris wheel. Work continued throughout the winter and into the spring, and on Friday, June 16, 2006 at approximately 5:00 pm it finally opened. I’ve had a chance to go up in the SkyWheel several times and it is very impressive.

According to the press release the SkyWheel is 53 metres (175 feet) tall. There are 42 gondolas. Each one is fully enclosed and equipped with heating and air conditioning. I haven’t had a chance to go up in the winter yet, but during the summer the air conditioning worked well. The sides of the gondolas are made with large UV protected, non-reflective glass to reduce glare. This is supposed to make it better to take pictures. Six gondolas can be loaded at one time. They can hold up to eight passengers, but usually don’t load any more than six.

Thanks to regular visitor Louise of Clifton Hill Resorts for providing me with some of the information for this posting.
