GolfLogic.ca has a coupon that gets you a round of golf at Thundering Waters Golf Club, a cart with a GPS device, for $79 + tax (note that you have to be registered with the site to get the coupon).

The person who runs the site had an opportunity to play the course. You can read his comments on his blog.

The complete guide to Niagara golf

I’m not a golfer at all (does mini-putt count?), but if you are, then a good site to check out is Teeing It Up Niagara.

Teeing It Up is a tourism promotional project showcasing Niagara, Ontario and Canadian golf, including new, links-style and Top 100 golf courses, select “stay & play” sites, golf resorts, and regional golf destinations.

Thundering Waters Golf Club leaflet

Last August there was quite a bit of publicity for John Daly and his stunt of trying to hit a golf ball across the gorge. This was part of the events surrounding the opening of his new Thundering Waters golf course. I recently noticed a promotional leaflet for the golf course. I scanned it and included the text below:

Golf at a discount

From the Niagara Falls Review:

A new $5 resident’s card will give area golfers a discount at two of the Niagara Parks Commission golf courses.

Residents will get 20 per cent off selected green fees and regularly priced merchandise at Whirlpool and Legends on the Niagara golf courses.

“When we undertook our community consultations last year, residents told us they wanted the chance to play our facilities and they wanted to do so at more affordable prices,” said Jim Williams, parks commission chairman.

“Whirlpool has such a nice tradition and is a very mature and beautiful course and Legends is a world-class facility. This is definitely an opportunity to broaden our local golfing base.”

Niagara Falls Golf Club pamphlet

One of the main reasons people come to the Niagara Region is to golf. There are golf courses to suit all tastes and budgets. One of the more established courses is at the Niagara Falls Golf Club.

I’ve scanned their promotional leaflet and included the text below:

Our friendly staff is here to make sure that your day at Niagara Falls Golf Course is a memorable one.

The 16th hole is an excellent par 4. It is 385 years with fairway bunkers strategically placed, "pinching" the tee shot landing area. The entrance to the green is tight with a pond and trees on the right, forcing the golfer to play the green for par.

John Daly Takes on Niagara Falls

The other day I was in a restaurant and the Golf Channel was on. They were showing when John Daly tried to hit a golf ball over the gorge. I’d never seen it before, but it was very well done. The crowd was very large and noisy, John interacted with the commentators, and it was a beautiful day. It looked like it would have been an exciting event to attend.

The Golf Channel web site has a 3-minute clip that you can view. You need to register, but it is free. On the main Golf Channel web page, there is a section called “The Daly Planet”. This is all about John Daly. If you click on the Exclusive Videos link, you can then choose the John Daly Takes on Niagara Falls video. When I first checked it out a few days ago, they had actually spelled Niagara wrong (Niagra) but it has since been corrected.

I found the clip was very slow in loading, and didn’t show at all in Firefox. But it did eventually show in Internet Explorer.

Niagara Parks enlists new teaching pro

From the St. Catharines Standard:

The Niagara Parks Commission has a new teaching partner for its 45-hole Legends on the Niagara golfing facility.
Renowned teaching pro Jim McLean - eight master instructors who have worked under McLean have been named to America’s Top 100 Instructors list and 19 are on The Golf Digest top teacher list - has agreed to establish a teaching academy at Legends beginning in the 2006 golf season.

Golf club ‘pleased to see’ O.J. Simpson

From the Friday, October 14, 2005 St. Catharines Standard:

Notorious former football star O.J. Simpson has apparently been popping up around Niagara Falls.

The hall of famer spent Wednesday morning at Thundering Waters Golf Club. “He came with two other people and asked for a tee time and we tried not to make a big fuss about it,” said Frank Racioppo, vice-president of operations at the golf club.

“It’s not uncommon for guests to the region to break away and play some golf. He’s and avid golfer and we were pleased to see him. He had a lot of nice things to say about the golf course.”

John Daly vs Niagara Falls News

I did a search at Google News for the keywords John Daly Niagara Falls and it returned 174 results. Try it for yourself. It sure made for some good publicity for the area!

Decent ratings for the John Daly vs Niagara Falls TV special

The Toronto Star (see the very last part of the article) is reporting that “266,000 watched John Daly hit golf balls into the Niagara Gorge Wednesday on Sportsnet.”
[the link is from me... it was not in the original Toronto Star article]
