NIAGARA DISCOVERIES: Bridges at mighty Niagara Falls

Last week marked the 79th anniversary of the collapse of the Upper Steel Arch Bridge (better known as the “Honeymoon” Bridge). Opened in 1898, it was the third of four bridges that spanned the Niagara River in the general area of what is now the Rainbow Bridge.

The first of these was the Falls View Suspension Bridge, completed in 1869. This was about two miles south of the Railway Suspension Bridge (built in 1855) and much closer to the falls. The Falls View Bridge had a wooden roadway just 10 feet wide. This prevented traffic from going both ways at the same time and caused back-ups for those waiting to cross in the opposite direction…
