For Immediate Release

Science Fiction Film Humanized – Bold Films on the Big Screen

The Niagara Falls Museums is pleased to announce the next film series presented at the Niagara Falls History Museum as part of @ the Museum Thursday Night.

This series complements our current exhibition on SPACE in the OPG Gallery, which features a Starlab, a moon rock from NASA and images of Niagara Falls at night.  With that influence in mind, Joan Nicks, series programmer, has put together a series that examines the human condition within the context of space and the future.  All films start at 7pm sharp and will be introduced by film critic and programmer Joan Nicks.

Films in the series include stars such as Harrison Ford, George Clooney and Kevin Spacey.  The series starts on February 6 with Blade Runner (1982, 117 minutes, Rated 14A).  This film is one of the coolest and visually inventive, post-modern films ever.  Other films in the series include missions to a space station to investigate what went wrong with the crew, the emptiness of space and a wry comic adventure.

The film series schedule is;

February 6 – Blade Runner
February 20 – Solaris
March 6  – Moon
March 20 – The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
April 3 – TBA

According to Prof. Nicks, “Georges Méliès’ whimsical film, A Trip to the Moon (1902), launched the science-fiction film. This series showcases some of the best directors who bring narrative richness, stylistic maturity and humanity to the genre.”  Ever since then, film makers have used the genre to tell some of the most compelling stories on the big screen.  This series examines the potential that the genre has to look towards the future while telling stories that have impact on the present.
