CAW applies to unionize casino workers

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The Canadian Auto Workers union is trying its luck again at Niagara’s casinos, betting the time is right to bring hundreds of workers under its umbrella.

The union filed an application Thursday to become the union representing most workers at Fallsview Casino and Casino Niagara. But management says it prefers to deal with its 4,500 employees directly, rather than through a union.

“Clearly, we have the support of the workers,” said John Aman, an organizer director with the CAW. “Based on the level of support and the issues … we felt now was a good time to proceed to a vote.”

The CAW expects between 2,800 and 2,900 casino employees will be eligible to vote, the majority of them dealers, slot attendants, in the hotel, kitchen and as wait staff.
