The Victoria Day and Memorial Day weekends are the unofficial start to Summer in Niagara Falls. This past weekend was the Victoria Day holiday (in Canada) and this coming weekend is the Memorial Day holiday (in US). Here are a few random observations:

  • The weather this past weekend was generally quite good. It was a little cool and there was some rain, but otherwise, it was very nice. There was lots of sun. It seems like as long as there is sun, people want to get out.
  • It seemed like there was lots of people around
  • I saw a horse-drawn carriage out for the first time this year
  • The gardens in Queen Victoria Park look great (as always)
  • The new Boston Pizza patio (it’s not really a patio anymore, but I don’t know what to call it) looks great, and was very busy

I have no idea how the business levels compared to years past, but at the very least, things seemed decent this year.

This coming weekend is the last weekend that travelers can freely cross the border without some sort of secure ID. This might be the last big American weekend for the city for a while. We’ll see…

Judging by the traffic levels on the QEW heading back towards Toronto Monday afternoon, I’d say most of the visitors were here from either the Golden Horseshoe, or heading home from a USA trip? If that is the case, I know Canadians spend much less then our American cousins and even if the visitor levels are close to the same as the past, companies may still see a drop in revenues.
