Someone posted a question to the Lonely Planet forum about a trip to Niagara Falls:

I’m planning to visit Niagara Falls from the night of Monday, May 11 until Thursday, May 14. I’ll be staying at the ACBB Hostel (formerly Lyons House Hostel) I’m a 31 year old woman traveling solo and would love any suggestions of places to go out that might be backpacker friendly — i.e. that I could go to on my own without ending up somewhere sleazy. I’m not sure if something like this exists, but any suggestions would be welcome. I usually have luck meeting people at hostels to hang out with, but if not, I’d like to find somewhere cool to go on my own.

Also, I’m planning to get that pass that gets you into different attractions (Maid of the Mist, Journey Behind the Falls, etc.) I’m guessing that a day is enough to do all that, and I’ll probably spend my other day doing a helicopter ride or walking across the bridge, etc. I might check out Niagara on the Lake at some point – how do you get there and how much time would you allocate?

One Comment to “Niagara Falls – Backpacker-friendly bars?”

  1. Ron Jeremy says:

Couldn’t tell you about backpacker friendly bars however “The Wild Mushroom” on Victoria Ave. is in the tourist area (within sight of Casino Niagara) but without the high prices associated with most other bars in the tourist area. Plus they have great food. The Hostel you are staying at is about 3 minutes from the shroom.

As far as the pass for multiple attractions goes. It you could do it in a day if you start by visiting Maid of the Mist, then go to the White Water Walk (my personal favorite). The People Mover bus included in your pass will get you there. Because Niagara’s Fury and Journey Behind the Falls are open after dark they should be done later in the day. Added bonus, there are no lineups for ether after 6pm!

There is a second day of People Mover transport included with the package.
If you plan on going to the Aero Car, Butterfly Conservatory, or on the Power Plant tour the bus will take you there as well (half price coupons included with the package for these attractions).

If you don’t plan on going to these attractions I still recommend a visit to the Niagara Glen (spectacular hiking trails which take you to the waters edge) and the Botanical Gardens (30 acres of immaculate gardens ponds and displays). Both are free and the People Mover will take you to both areas. Just for these two alone count on at least 6 hours to see it all.

Your best bet for Niagara On The Lake is to call a local Taxi company and find out if the have a flat fate to N.O.T.L. (most do) usually $20 each way.

Couldn’t tell you how much time to budget for N.O.T.L. I’m a guy who doesn’t enjoy shopping.

If you are in N.O.T.L. you should check out Fort George and the Jetboat. The Jetboat is a must do although it is a bit pricey so look for or ask around for coupons. Also call them in advance as they fill up quickly. Also, they may be able to give you a free shuttle to N.O.T.L.
