Has anyone ever seen any statistics on how many people “swim” over the falls every year?
Anyone care to estimate?
If only 3 people have survived in the past 100 years…. those aren’t good odds.
One of the first times I ever went to Niagara Falls (first time that I can remember for sure) was in 1994 (on a trip to Toronto – from Calgary – to visit relatives) and I literally got off the People Mover bus and ran to the falls as quick as I could (I was 15). The next thing I saw was a man taking a “swim” over the falls. I dont know why, but the first thing I did was take out my kid camera and take a photo. I still have that blurry photo today and still think about the incident frequently. One second he was swimming towards the falls…the next he was gone. Sad.
WOW! I can’t shake the image of seeing the man go over the Falls on the famous video footage of a Buffalo newscast on You Tube. I can’t imagine seeing something like that in person, truly sad!
In a Review article titled “Suicide prevention difficult at falls” they gave a few gloomy stats Scott.
From 1856 to 1995 2,780 known suicides, approx. 200 since 1995.
10 to 15 river related suicides occur each year.
71% are men between ages 20 to 40.
21% go over the Horseshoe Falls.
Thanks Lonny!
I am sure there are a lot of night “swimmers” as well.
Thanks for the information.
