From the Niagara Falls Review:

When a homegrown company wants to build an $80-million in the middle of a recession, it doesn’t take city councillors long to give the green light.

Canadian Niagara Hotels got the city’s approval for a 30-storey, 364-room “all-suites” hotel at the foot of the Rainbow Bridge during Monday’s council meeting.

The hotel will provide a different type of accommodation from what any other hotel in Niagara Falls provides, said Michael DiCienzo, a vice-president in the family business.

Its suite rooms will be more like a small apartment than a typical hotel room, giving families amenities like a kitchen and living room that will allow them to have a longer stay in Niagara Falls than if they were staying in a conventional hotel room, DiCienzo told city council members during a planning meeting Monday where they approved his zoning application.

WOW, I didn’t see this coming! I check the city website and the public notices everyday and there was nothing I saw regarding this. I even started watching some of the Niagara Falls public meeting on T.V last night, but my oldest daughter asking me to play Operation and Connect 4 trumps that anyday. I quess this puts even more pressure on CNH to come up with a working deal to keep the Casino on their property. I just hope this isn’t like the owners of the Skylon Tower who come out with a new highrise proposal every few years just to keep their name in the media… can anyone say Rainbow Tower??

FANTASTIC NEWS that could not come at a better time!!! Hey they even mention the Rainbow Tower in a way that sounds very promising….

“He also designed the Rainbow Tower Hotel for the DiCienzos, a 59-storey structure that’s to be built between the existing Sheraton on the Falls and Crowne Plaza hotels – overtop of the Falls Avenue entrance to Casino Niagara. ”

    *keeps fingers crossed* :)

Lonny, these are the same people who announced the Rainbow Tower. This is CNH’s fourth announcement on a proposed hotel yet to be built. They have proposed the Westin Fallsview on Robinson St., Hyatt Place on Stanley, Rainbow Tower beside Casino Niagara and now this.

The only reason people take this company seriously is because it’s HUGE! They own 5 hotels plus one on the American side, the property Casino Niagara leases, plus dozens of restaurants, shops, and attractions. They can actually pull off their proposals. I hope to see some of their projects started though.

The conception drawings on the council agenda (http://www.niagarafalls.ca/web.....?id=377643) show it being basically right in front of Planet Hollywood, so it would seem that it has lost whatever luster it had. It was mentioned in the Review article and in the presentation to council that this will be directly at the end of the Rainbow Bridge, so will be a prominent landmark for visitors coming across the bridge. That being the case, the rendering in the agenda (although not the greatest quality reproduction) certainly doesn’t make it look very attractive. My first impression was that it looked more like an apartment building. I guess we’ll all see if and when.

I hope this all suite hotel is like a extended stay suite hotel like Residence Inn, Homewood Suites, Staybridge suites, Niagara area sure could use an extended stay suite hotel since it’s such a family destination.
