Sometimes it’s pretty hard to get all of the “big players” of Niagara Falls figured out. There are several families, and siblings and/or children often are involved.
Recently I posted about the Clarion changing it’s name to the Falls Plaza Hotel. This name could be confused with the Fallsview Plaza Hotel. But what makes it more confusing it that they are owned by the same person. If I have this right, Carmen Menachella owns them. He owns the Embassy Suites Niagara Falls – Fallsview, Fallsview Plaza Hotel, Falls Plaza Hotel (formerly Clarion) and the new Dave & Buster’s (formerly the Pilgrim Restaurant and Hilltop Hotel). The family also owns the Howard Johnson by the Falls, Marriott Courtyard and the Marriott Niagara Falls Fallsview & Spa. These are owned under either the Niagara 21 Group (formerly Ritz Motel Ltd) or the Fallsview Group. I’m not clear on whether both names are used, or if they are two different companies owning a different set of hotels.

To clarify, the Fallsview Marriott and Courtyard Marriott are owned by Niagara 21st Group which is owned by some of the Menachella family but have nothing to do with Carmen Menachella. Both Menachella familys are related but are separate businesses in competition with each other. The Howard Johnson by the falls is owned by Rino Marcone who also owns Tower Plumbing. Rino purchased the Howard Johnson from Victor Menachella (Carmen’s father) in 2004.
Thanks Scott. I knew I’d mess that up
I know there is a Laura as well, but I’m not sure which group she’s associated with.
i heard the exact same thing ..that the families are totally seperate and competing..
Laura and Marie are sisters and own Niagara 21st Group.
N21G used to include Carmen’s family as well, but there was a fight a few years ago that separated them into different businesses.
Here’s an interesting article from Bizjournals about Fallsview Group and the expansion of the Fallsview Plaza (soon to be Four Points Sheraton) and the 30 story Hampton Inn on that tiny trangle across the street. It has this about the expansion:
“The complex will feature four restaurants, including an East Side Mario’s that opened in July. Still to come: a 40,000-square-foot Dave & Buster’s, an IHOP location and a Keg steakhouse. Dave & Buster’s and IHOP are expected to open in 2009; Keg will welcome its first diners the following year.”
I don’t know if this is the same Dave & Buster’s that is supposed to be on Clifton Hill, or another one. And another Keg practically across the street from the one at Embassy? Interesting to say the least.

Thanks for the link to the whole article. I had seen this, but normally you have to pay for the entire article.
I agree, it’s a interesting article, but the timing is odd (I’m questioning the article, not you, Drafty…). Is there anything new in the article? We already knew about the addition to the Fallsview Plaza Hotel (former Renaissance Fallsview). We already knew about the new hotel that would be built next door. We already knew about the walkway, as it used to be there. During the renovations, they have taken down their connecting part, but will obviously reconnect it. We already knew they bought the Pilgrim Restaurant/Hilltop Hotel, and are building a Dave & Buster’s. I think the reporter got it mixed up with regards to it being on the same complex. The only thing I’m not clear on is where the IHOP and Keg fit in.
But hey, I guess keeping your company in the news is usually a good thing.
The new 10 story tower is news to me? It was first stated in the very first public notice, that a 5 story addition and a 4 story additon would wrap around the perimeter of the existing building. As far as the Keg goes, it doesn’t make sense being that close to the one at Embassy Suites. Everything else sounds great and would be welcome additons.
IHOP is going on the mezzane level, where the old breakfast restuarent used to be
i believe they’re moving front desk to mezzane level also
and then the other two restaurents will be on the main level, along with east sides
