From the Niagara Falls Review:

Ontario needs to take “practical, concrete steps” to help border communities through difficult economic times, Progressive Conservative leader John Tory says.

The provincial opposition leader was in Fort Erie yesterday afternoon to meet with Mayor Douglas Martin and the Fort Erie Economic Development and Tourism Corporation to discuss the struggling tourism industry in the region.

He says he’d like to see Premier Dalton McGuinty stop spending money on “feel good ads designed to get re-elected” and focus on drawing in tourists from the United States.

“The McGuinty government found $8 million for yet another expensive tourism study instead of investing that money to fill hotel beds, attract shoppers and visitors to our attractions,” he said.

With the holidays quickly approaching and the Canadian dollar plunging to below 80 cents per U.S. dollar, Ontario should look at attracting American shoppers, Tory said.
