NASCAR announcement expected Tuesday

This isn’t exactly Niagara Falls news, but it will affect the region, and is certainly interesting…

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Tuesday will be a busy day in Niagara.

While voters head to the polls, many people in the area will be awaiting word from the United Arab Emirates about plans for a NASCAR-style race track proposed for the west side of the QEW between Bowen Road and Gilmore Road in Fort Erie.

Despite rumours that the announcement would come out of the UAE – where Fort Erie Mayor Doug Martin is with Economic Development and Trade Minister Sandra Puppatello this week to take part in the Cityscape Expo in Dubai – it’s now expected that announcement will come after Thanksgiving.

“Tuesday after 3 p.m.” read a brief e-mail from Jim Thibert, general manager of Fort Erie’s Economic Development and Tourism Corp. who accompanied Martin to Dubai.

The propsed $150-million track will have seating for 67,000 spectators, a 1.6-kilometre oval and a street track that would accommodate NASCAR, Indy and Formula One racing.

If they build a race track they won’t be getting NASCAR or IRL race.

If you look at the Cup Series right now, the schdule is full where Bruton Smith had to buy tracks to get a race. Kentucky Speedway tried to sue NASCAR to get a race but failed. Plus people think that 2 road course races are enoguh. At best they would get a Nationwide and Canadain Tire Race.

It will be a waste of money IMO.

Don’t be too quick to discount the possibility of a NASCAR race comming to Fort Erie.

“NASCAR has said expanding into the lucrative Southern Ontario region is one of its top priorities.”

Forget Sprint Cup. Their schedule is full.

Craftsman Truck Series the best bet, or perhaps move the Nationwide race from Montreal. Don’t overlook NASCAR Modifieds and The NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.

The road course portion of the complex will and can attract a host of other series.

Getting this thing built on budget and paid for will be job one.

I don’t see NASCAR bringing a truck race to Canada. Right now they can’ get a full filed to race. Which will bring more costs to the teams.

Why would NASCAR move the race from Montreal to Fort Erie when that market is already served by Watkings Glen and Michigan.

The best the track would get would be a NASCAR Canadian Tire Race, ARCA, and Star Mazda.
