Feds are right to be impatient with our delays on people mover

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Backed into a corner by the federal government, the City of Niagara Falls has to move ahead fairly quickly with its long dreamed of people-mover system

or forget about Ottawa’s $25-million pledge to help out.

City hall learned recently that unless there is an agreement in place by June 2009 to get the people-mover project rolling, the federal government will consider the file closed and remove its monetary offer that was based all along on the city matching the federal contribution.

It’s easy to understand Ottawa’s impatience -this project has been in the planning stages for years and years.

Ottawa made its offer back in 2003.

We’ll take famous tourists for $200, Alex

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Answer: What popular game show host was able to wander around Niagara Falls virtually unnoticed on Thursday?

Hint: It wasn’t Howie Mandel.

Instead, it was fellow Canuck Alex Trebek who was in town Thursday to film video clues for future episodes of “Jeopardy.”

“It’s always good to come home and I consider southern Ontario as home,” he said of his return to Canada.

The 68-year-old Sudbury native enjoyed his anonymity as he walked along the Niagara Parkway near Table Rock, enjoying the view of the Horseshoe Falls.

Once his production crew set up shop, however, a curious crowd quickly formed and the digital cameras came out.

This was Trebek’s second trip to Niagara in less than two months.

He and his family visited Niagara during the summer and took in some of the sights.

“We enjoyed it, but there were a lot of people,” he said near Table Rock.

“You have to have your wits about you when you drive here in the summer.”

The “Jeopardy” production crew filmed potential clues along the Niagara River throughout the day.

New development chief sees vast potential in Niagara Falls

From the Buffalo News:

After 30 years of experience in economic development, Peter F. Kay looks at more than data and statistics. He looks for what he calls intangibles.

“People in Niagara Falls must develop a positive attitude,” the city’s new economic development director said Monday. “If the attitude of a community is positive, we can achieve anything. People become more creative. Investment dollars begin to pour in and one dynamic leads to another.”

Kay began his job at City Hall a week ago and has already met with several state and city leaders whose cooperation he seeks to help turn the city around.

“Niagara Falls has such potential, but we must all work together,” he said, acknowledging a lack of cooperation that has held the city back in the past.

Travlyn Womyn’s Journey: Niagara Falls, 2008

Someone with a Blogger blog posted about a recent trip to Niagara Falls:

What a treat! We took a mini-vacation to Niagara Falls last week, staying in Canada. The weather was perfect and the leaves just beginning to turn. As Michael had never been there before we took advantage of one of the package deals at Howard Johnson’s on Victoria Ave. The room was great - even a Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom - I sure took advantage of great soaking baths wile we were there!
