What we know about Niagara’s Fury

niagaras_fury_logo.jpg

Based on the article from the Niagara Falls Reporter (thanks Rob for the link; for everyone else… be sure to check out the article, it’s a good one) and other things I’ve been able to find out, here is what Niagara’s Fury is shaping up to be (along with other details about the renovations at Table Rock Place):

  1. It’s hard to get full details on what is going on as workers had to sign non-disclosure agreements.
  2. The main entrance will be via the walkway, which enters the main building on the second floor, into a large foyer. There will be kiosks, info booths, etc. You can see an artists rendering of this on the Table Rock development page of the Niagara Parks site.
  3. There will be a two-level observation area which overlooks the Falls. Near there is also where the new restaurant will be.
  4. Also near there will be the entrance to Niagara’s Fury.
  5. After purchasing a ticket, you will enter into a waiting area. You’ll then enter a large room. As the Niagara Falls Report mentioned, “One source told me that Niagara’s Fury is a type of floating theater where an indoor waterfall surrounds visitors and a multimedia display takes place on, in and around the cascades that immerses you in the history and power of the world’s most famous waterfalls.” I’m sure the area isn’t actually going to be floating (bobbing up and down), but there will be water around you.
  6. The presentation will be on a screen that wraps around the room (I don’t know if it is a big screen, a full 360º video or a dome screen). Obviously the sound will be pretty intense. Apparently there will be other effects as well such as rain, snow, lightning, and more. The whole purpose of all of this is to experience the crashing, cracking, erosion, water, and more that it took to create the Falls.
  7. The main part of the attraction will last about 15 minutes.
  8. The Niagara Falls Reporter quoted the Niagara Falls Review as sayingit will be a Universal Studios type attraction. I’ve never been, but apparently it will be like the Twister attraction (follow the link for a brief video of that attraction).
  9. I have no idea what the cost of the ride will be, but I would assume it would be pricey… $15 maybe? It’s hard to tell, but building all of this is going to be expensive and they are going to want to make the money back somehow.

It sounds fantastic! Just a couple of other thoughts… I’ve mentioned before that it seems like a strange place to have the attraction. If you want to experience the power of the Falls, then go to the free lookout that is 20 ft away, or go down to the Journey Behind the Falls. Also, there just seems to be so much hype surround this, it seems that it will be almost impossible for the attraction to live up to that hype, no matter how good it is.

I can’t wait something that is better than those 3d theaters.

I gotta say Graham you really do an amazing job on this site! Thank you for the all the insight, it makes me proud to live here!

I am also thinking this will be a Universalesque attraction. While it could be like Twister…. I am also thinking it will be like Posideon’s Fury (minus the actor/guide).

Ah, what do I know. Lets see how well this does at Table Rock.

    Good possibility Paul!
Here is a link to the Poseidon’s Fury attraction at Universal’s Islands of Adventure.

Paul, I think you are dead on. :) It could also have a Native as a guide. If I were a betting man, Id place a large bet that this attraction is VERY close to what Poseidon’s Fury is in Orlando, if not the exact same with a Niagara theme. If so, this is very cool!

haha I blush. It would indeed be very cool… but I still question its viability, given its location, plus, unlike a ride, that wouldnt be the kind of attraction that you would keep doing over and over again.

I don’t like the location being so close to the real deal; that said, perhaps the location will benefit the attraction, and people will step outside right after and appreciate the falls more?
I think the problem is (Graham touched on this) the more you hype something, the more you set yourself up for let down. It’s always a big risk to over hype anything.

Yes it is. There is a word that floats around roller coaster enthusiast forums. That word is “anticipointment”. Basically, it is used when a new coaster gets hyped so much that you expect so much from it… and it ends up letting you down.

Lets hope that this is not the case with this new attraction.

Hmm, that sounds like Dragster at Cedar Point, back in 2003.

If it is anything like Poseidon’s Fury, with a Niagara Falls-theme, then I’d be stoked. I wish I knew the investment amount they’re pouring into this because they’re making it out to be something pretty damn big, and it may be so big, I might actually suck it up & cross that bridge… deal with the harrassment @ the border patrol… and check this thing out for myself!

To me it sounds rediculous. Why would i wanna pay to experience a simulated version of the Falls, when they are right outside the door?? Good god the NPC must really be desperate for ideas.

this roller coaster anticipointment thing sounds like Behemoth at Wonderland, opening this year, probably only 30-60 seconds like the rest the roller coasters there. lol :P
anyway, this thing sounds good, but i would like to hear from the official website, you know, just to be sure.either way, it still sounds pretty sweet!! :D

Well this attraction will be about the CREATION of the falls, which I think will be the differentiator to just looking out at the falls. I think Niagara is right in saying people will probably appreciate the falls more. On top of that, how many educational attractions does Niagara have?? Not very many.

You took the words out of my mouth Dan. Maybe they’ll have Keith Tinkler there to cut the ribbon and lay some geological wisdom on us. : )

Ive always said NF needs a historical museum covering all aspects of the city and its history. The only back-ground information you can get in a large dose is @ IMAX, and it doesn’t go into many subjects. I think an all things NF historical museum would be a big hit.

  16. 16 Fallsview

The perfect place for that historical museum Niagara, would be right down the road from this new attraction at the old “and now empty” Toronto Power Generating Station. People love to hear the history of a place they are visiting, especially the Falls. I also think this new attraction will hit the mark and be very successful. However even if this is a flop, judging by the response so far on here and other sites and having been involved to a small degree in advertising in the past, I think that they have accomplished there goal! Good Job NPC!!

  17. 17 Chris

it sounds good, no doubt! :D

Anticipointment can happen with anything, you just have to be careful that you don’t hype things up so much in your mind that you are let down by them, because there really are few examples of attractions and products out there where the hype = exactly what the finished product is, at least in my opinion. People keep hyping up video games that are being released but in the end they are all just video games.

I am picturing a large interactive virtual reality type room with a screen that surrounds the whole room and where participants can interact with the screens. Of course this is probably only part of the whole experience.
