Stereographs of Niagara Falls a Century Ago

niagara_falls_stereograph.jpg

Greenwich Time, a newspaper in Connecticut, has some very old pictures of Niagara Falls on their web site. There are 19 of them, all of them from the Library of Congress. Because of the age and size of them, it is hard to see the detail of the pictures. The Library of Congress site has more detailed pictures which I’ll link to another time.

Aside from the two pictures side-by-side looking identical.
What exactly are stereographs, and what makes them more special than a regular photograph?

The images are not exactly the same. If you had a special viewer, you would see the scene in 3-D. Wikipedia explains it well
