$4-million tourism plan targets border

From the Niagara Falls Review:

A $4-million, multi-city campaign to boost enrollment in the Nexus program is being spearheaded by the Binational Tourism Alliance.

Executive director Arlene White said she hopes the campaign, which includes newspaper, radio and television advertising in markets in Ontario, New York State, Michigan and Ohio, will lead to a tenfold increase in the number of Nexus users and boost visitors to the area.

Currently, 104,000 Canadians are Nexus card holders - half of them in Niagara and Windsor - a “ridiculous” number, White said, given the fact the origins for the program date back to the Smart Border Declaration created in December, 2001.

“Personally, I’d like to see Niagara take the lead because we have the most to lose,” White said.

The target is 250,000 Nexus members by June, 2009.
